What interactive maths activities are included in the Twinkl Maths App?
The Twinkl Maths App is made up of two distinct areas that are carefully designed to improve children's knowledge of key instant recall facts:
1. Skill Safari - This area of the app has dozens of engaging, interactive maths games designed to meet the needs of the national curriculum of England. The maths games are arranged in year groups and cover the mathematical topics:
- Number and Place Value
- Addition and Subtraction
- Multiplication and Division
Each of these areas has multiple maths games such as pairs, press the button, catch the answer and many more, all focused on developing quick recall of mental maths facts.
Children can have fun interacting with different characters for the place value games, addition and subtraction games and multiplication and division games.
2. Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) - This area of the maths app is specifically designed to imitate the government Multiplication Tables Check. This simulation allows children to practise on a platform similar to the real thing, but also features customisable settings meaning the app can be tailored to a child's needs allowing all learners to increase their speed and accuracy. Settings also include the ability to remove the timer, and change the time given to answer each question and the time between them.
How will playing the Twinkl Maths App games benefit my child?
The exciting interactive maths games in Skill Safari will help to develop your child's recollection of mental maths facts. Children who can quickly recall the key instant recall facts of the primary curriculum will harness mathematical fluency, enabling them to excel.
Who is the Twinkl Maths App suitable for?
The maths app covers the primary maths curriculum from Year 1 to Year 6 and is suitable for children aged 5 and over. Although the app is designed for primary pupils, children and teachers in KS3 (secondary) may also find it a useful and fun revision tool, as they can enjoy playing the interactive maths games as a handy way of refreshing their skills.
My child is in Year 1, will they be expected to know their times tables?
The MTC is a separate area of the app which can be switched off for younger learners. We recommend that teachers or parents turn off this area for children until after they are secure with the concept of multiplication which is taught within year 2. The Skill Safari games have been designed by maths mastery specialist and are carefully aligned to each years maths curriculum.
My child has additional learning needs, how have you catered for them?
If your child is working below age-related expectations you can move them to a different year group’s games within Skill Safari, they will not see the year they have been assigned within the app. We have included audio instructions throughout the app and the MTC has additional features designed to mimic the accessibility settings of the government check such as colour overlays. Using these within the app is a great way to prepare and ensure your child gets the right settings applied in the statutory check.
How does the Multiplication Tables Check area imitate the government check?
The Multiplication Tables Check area of the maths app is set up to include three practice questions, followed by 25 questions, each with a six-second window to answer it. There is a three-second gap between each question. These times are customisable within the app, enabling children to gain speed and accuracy gradually the more they practise.
There are also options to include a countdown beep, a black and white colour theme, and all options given in the actual government test.

You can also see the children’s latest scores for each of the maths games and how their scores have improved over time, making the Twinkl Maths App a perfect fun tool for assessment and tracking attainment.
How can I use this as part of a whole school approach to maths in my school?
Children are rewarded with stars based on the amount they play, meaning pupils of all ability levels can achieve within the maths app. This could be a fantastic opportunity for healthy competition between classes and a feature of your weekly assemblies.
