Child-friendly news written by teachers
Twinkl NewsRoom Weekly helps educators get their learners talking about the news. Every week, NewsRoom’s team of experienced teachers produce age-appropriate news articles with reading questions that are linked to the key stage 2 national curriculum reading objectives.
What is Twinkl NewsRoom weekly?
Twinkl NewsRoom Weekly brings a child-friendly news event straight into your classroom. It's designed for children aged 7 to 11 and encourages them to engage with current events in a way that’s both fun and thought-provoking. Each weekly pack presents a news story, along with an open-ended question to spark discussions and debates among your learners.
Through these articles, the idea is to help children express their own opinions and build confidence in sharing their thoughts with others. It's perfect for promoting critical thinking and great conversations! New packs are available every Wednesday, so you’ll always have fresh content to explore.
How are news stories chosen?
Every week, the team meets to look at stories emerging in the news. They choose stories that they know are relevant to children’s experiences and can be used to meet curriculum objectives in reading, spoken language and citizenship.
How can I use the resources in my setting?
You can either print off the articles or display them on an electronic device. NewsRoom is ideal to use with a whole class or in groups during guided reading sessions. You might like to start by looking at the image and asking children to predict what is occurring in the news. If it’s obvious, you may want to ask children if they know anything about the topic mentioned in the article. You might want to get learners to read as a pair and get them to underline any words they don’t understand. Once the children have done this, go through any misunderstandings. Then, get them to complete the reading questions.
How long does it take to complete a session with Twinkl NewsRoom Weekly?
The pack includes a guidance document that explains how to conduct a 15-minute, 30-minute, or 60-minute lesson using Twinkl NewsRoom. You can use the 60-second reads to help children read and discuss current events. The PowerPoint in the pack can be used for an assembly, class discussion, or debate. Additionally, the packs can be used for an extracurricular debate club. The team hopes that the variety of content will provide the flexibility you need for your learners.
