Launching Twinkl Spelling for Web
To launch Twinkl Spelling for Web, simply head over to the Twinkl Spelling landing page and click the "Launch" button at the top of the landing page.
You must be signed in to Explore Twinkl Spelling and your level of Twinkl Membership will determine the content and features you can access. All Twinkl members can explore the first six levels of each world for FREE.
Once launched, you will be greeted by a welcome message to decipher whether you are accessing the game as a learner or an adult.
If you enter the game as an adult and dependant upon your membership type, you will see one of two messages. From the welcome message, select "Explore Mode" to get started with free access to the first six levels of each spelling world. Please note that within the demo mode, your progress will not be saved and default settings will be used.
If you are already an Ultimate member, you are able to add up to 50 Learner Logins via the "Manage Learner Logins" link (this will be explained further in our Walkthrough - Part Four).
Twinkl Spelling World Menu
The first screen you will see is the 'world menu' screen. Each world corresponds to a school year group, starting at (England) Y1 and running through to Y6. Each world has its own sports theme, colour scheme and unique gear to unlock. More details on rewards and unlocks later though!
The video below shows you how to navigate through each world by clicking on the navigation buttons, in the top left of the world menu is the exit (pink) and feedback (green) button - you can use these to leave the game or provide feedback on Twinkl Spelling for Web.
In the top right, you will see a question mark button which links to useful in-game help and a full screen button to toggle to a full screen view for the ultimate immersive spelling experience!
To enter any world, press the "Enter" button show in the middle of the screen, below the world description text.
Twinkl Spelling Level Menu
Within the Spelling for Web app, there are six separate worlds that relate to the spelling aims and statutory spelling words from the National Curriculum for England. These worlds are:
Link's Speed Rink - Year 1 National Curriculum spellings (primarily aimed at children aged 5-6)
Intel's B-Ball Court - Year 2 National Curriculum spellings (primarily aimed at children aged 6-7)
Nova's Breakbeat Studio - Year 3 National Curriculum spellings (primarily aimed at children aged 7-8)
Garrus' Climbing Wall - Year 4 National Curriculum spellings (primarily aimed at children aged 8-9)
Oxa's BMX Track - Year 5 National Curriculum spellings (primarily aimed at children aged 9-10)
Kylo's Kumite Dojo - Year 6 National Curriculum spellings (primarily aimed at children aged 10-11)
After entering a world, you will see the level menu. Each level corresponds to a week of term, Term 1A through to term 3B for Y1-Y6. Each level consists of 10 words, which reinforce the spelling rule/skill to practise for that week to correspond to the Twinkl PlanIt Spelling teaching resources.
Scroll up and down to see all the levels in a world, remember, if you are an Ultimate Twinkl member you will be able to access all levels, all other members will only have access to Term 1A content:
Within the level menu click either "Train" or "Compete" to get going. If you click train, this will show you the training game menu (details to come!) and if you click compete, you will be launched directly into compete mode.
Twinkl Spelling Training Games
After clicking "Train", the training game menu will load. The menu will show the six training game types we have available for every level (Word Search, Word Jumble, React!, React Extreme!, Whack & Spell and LCWC), which can be launched by pressing the "Go" button. Like in the level menu, you can also edit the game settings, toggle full screen and exit/provide feedback:
Twinkl Spelling In-Game Navigation
Let's click "Go" on the "React Extreme!" game to see what happens. Firstly, if the setting is enabled, you will see some game instructions, after reading these, you can press the "Start" button to begin the game.
At any time, again depending upon the game settings, you can leave a game and return to the menu. You can see this all in action in the video below and "Compete" mode works in exactly the same way:
