Reward System - Gems, Stars, Medals and Unlocks
Important: You must be logged in as a learner for Twinkl Spelling for Web to show/record progress and generate data for reporting/assessment. Whilst explore mode does not record progress, rewards are still awarded.
What Rewards are Available?
As mentioned earlier in earlier parts of the walkthrough, there are four main rewards to be aware of, these are:
Gems are rewarded for completing a training game (with at least one correct answer). There is no limit to the number of gems that can be earned on a particular world/level/training game. Gems can therefore be used as a rough indicator of training effort/attempts.
Stars are rewarded for completing a compete game (with at least one correct answer). There is no limit to the number of stars that can be earned on a particular world/level. Stars can therefore be used as a rough indicator of compete effort/attempts.
Medals - Bronze, silver and gold medals are only ever rewarded for completing a compete game with a score of 8/10 (bronze), 9/10 (silver) or 10/10 (gold). Only one medal can be awarded for each level - if you replay a level and improve your score, your previous medal is replaced. Medals can therefore be used as a rough indicator of attainment/understanding/mastery.
Gear Unlocks - Three gear unlocks are available for each world and are awarded as learners earn medals. Learners visually see the world's character image change, and gear appear, as unlocks happen. Check out the world description for each world to understand what gear unlocks are available.
The bronze gear unlock happens when a learner has earned any 12 medals in a world (1/3 of possible medals), the silver gear unlock happens when a learner has earned any 24 medals in a world (2/3 of possible medals) and the gold unlock happens when a leader has effectively 'completed' a world - achieving all 36 gold medals.
Unlocks can be used as a rough indicator of coverage.
How Can I See What Rewards Have Been Earned?
Rewards can be seen within the game in the following ways:
The World Menu shows gems, stars and medals obtained in each world. Gear unlocks are indicated by the state of the world character image, with items appearing as gear is unlocked.
The Level Menu shows both gems, stars and medals obtained in each World, and for each individual level, for this reason, this is arguably the best place to see rewards within the game:
The Training Game Menu shows gems, stars and medals obtained in each level.
Reward Visibility when Using Learner Logins
In addition to these in-game views of rewards, account holders have access to a detailed centralised report on the rewards given to their learners via their Twinkl Account area.
Account holders can track effort and attainment and/or choose to show cohort-wide attainment, for example, within a motivational class leader board.
Game Settings & Full Screen Toggle
In Explore mode, game settings can be accessed and changed from either the level or training game menus by clicking the cog icon in the top right, full screen mode can be toggled by clicking the full screen button to the right of the cog icon:
Current available game settings are as follows:
Letter Names or Letter Sounds - toggle this on/off to enable/disable the name of the letter being read or the letter sound being read as it is used within the game. For example, if the letter a is pressed on the keyboard when spelling a word, the letter name 'a' is read aloud.
Game Instructions - toggle this on/off to enable/disable the game instructions showing when a game is launched.
"The Word Is" Audio - toggle this on/off to enable/disable the playing of the phrase "The word is" before every word in the LCWC training game and the Compete game.
Letter Animation - toggle this on/off to enable/disable the animation of letters in the Word Jumble (letters rotate slightly whilst waiting to be selected) and React (gems/stars wobble) games. This setting has no effect on the animations used in the Whack and Spell Game as the animation is central to the game play.
