What is Decoders?
Decoders is Twinkl’s phonics intervention scheme, designed specifically to support older children aged 7 to 11. With the help of these lovely resources, you can ensure all children have secure phonics knowledge of GPCS, common exception words, blending and segmenting.
These resources have been created by educators to help teachers who are teaching the English national curriculum to support their children. Although these resources have been made for UK teachers, there may be activities and intervention resources to use as inspiration to support your students.
What resources are available?
Informal phonics assessments provide an easy-to-use, effective way to assess students’ progress and identify learning gaps. You’ll find everything you could need to assess your learners, including a teacher recording sheet, an answer sheet for students and a set of decodable flashcards.
Each week contains five handy, scripted session plans that’ll guide you through your interventions. Each pack also includes some fun activities, allowing children to practise and apply the sounds and words covered in the session.
An effective way to record progress and a handy physical record of children's learning. There’s space for six weeks of sessions and each session has a focus based on the various sounds or words children have learnt.
Through fun multisensory phonics learning, children can apply their phonics knowledge in new, interesting ways. By participating in hands-on activities, children will feel more engaged and be more likely to remember key graphemes, affixes and words. These resources contain plenty of useful guidance on how to conduct each activity, roughly how long they should take and what children will learn from them.
How long do the sessions take?
The daily sessions are planned to take around 20 minutes to deliver and they follow the 5-part lesson structure similar to the main phonics programme. You may choose to deliver the interventions as part of a guided reading session or as part of your spelling/grammar input in English lessons.
What reading can I use to support children using Decoders resources?
Our Rhino Readers Decoders books are perfectly aligned with the intervention and fully decodable. You’ll find a book for each week of teaching from Level 2, Week 3. There’s a wide range of genres, topics and themes to engage all children, and each eBook is available in a choice of 2 fonts to aid readability and support dyslexic learners.
